The building itself is very charming and rustic. It blends in well with the beautiful surroundings of Slate Run and Pine Creek Valley. The wood plank floors and smells of home-made bread baking, fresh sticky-buns and all the yummy smelling candles makes the store very inviting for shoppers to linger and browse the unique items while waiting for their sandwiches or taking a break from the trail. The building is approximately 8600 sq. feet and there is an upstairs living quarters that is about 900 sq. feet. The original portion was built in 1946, but it has been upgraded and added on over the years. The store offers gas service (updated system, newer tanks), unique and high-end gifts, jewelry and apparel, groceries, novelty items, lottery, freshly made sandwiches to order (you will not find a better sandwich anywhere, guaranteed!), hand-dipped ice-cream, baked goods, bike rentals, and of course one of the largest and most well known Orvis Dealerships in North Central PA! There is plenty of parking, a huge covered front porch and side porch for customers to rest and enjoy their ice cream cone and even an access for those who snowmobile to get gas. This is truly a YEAR-ROUND BUSINESS!
The building is centrally cooled, heated with efficient propane (brand new furnace) and has a back up generator. There is a storage area and also an office.
This is a top-notch Orvis Dealership. This is located towards the rear of the store and you step down into this shop. The display for the flies was custom-made for the store and there is plenty of room for merchandise. The current owners will provide 1 year of council/mentoring in operation of this lucrative business. Fly rods in this store sell for as high as $1000 and it is the number one stop of all fishermen who visit the area to get current stream conditions and information, supplies or just to say "hello" and chat for a bit. This is truly and "old-fashioned" store! It is much more than just a retail shop! There are regular customers who have turned into friends over the years! The current owners also sell rods online during the "off" season to maximize their profit and make room for the new season's merchandise. There are also opportunities for guide services.
The upstairs living quarters is a very nice and cozy space. There are 2 bedrooms, a full bath, laundry, galley kitchen, living room and dining area. The decor is a rustic feel and it could be easily used for a rental if you did not need to live there. It is about 900 square feet and will include the appliances. It is currently used as extra office space. You will find this to be a comfortable retreat from your working day!
This iconic general store and Orvis tackle shop is located in the quaint village of Slate Run in the heart of Pine Creek Valley. Here is where you will find the "slow lane" of life and the kind of friendly neighborhood that you yearn for. Fishing in these waters is a sportsman's dream. This is a "specially regulated, fly-fishing, catch & release area". This is a renowned native brown trout stream, one of the top places to fish in Pennsylvania! There are also MANY hiking trails, kayaking opportunities, and of course the famous Pine Creek Rail Trail. Public access area to the creek and the rail trail are right behind the store making this the most optimum location for the HUB of Pine Creek Valley!
The store has some of the most unique gifts and novelties you will find anywhere! Customers browse for a long time while in the store and end up making purchases that they did not intend to make! Beautiful jewelry, chimes, purses, food novelty items and intoxicating candles are among the items. Also, customers can purchase apparel such as t-shirts, hats, sweatshirts and even pajamas that commemorate their love of the valley! There are groceries to fit the basic needs along with snack items, soda, coffee, specialty food items, etc. The seller will provide 1 year of mentoring/council to learn how to order, what items to order, how much for each season, etc. This transitional service will assist the new owners so that the store will remain "turnkey".
As previously mentioned, the fresh made sandwiches are the best and in fact are a hot tourist attraction here in the area. Orders are taken and while the sandwiches are being prepared, customers browse the store and ultimately find unique items and other grocery items to accompany the sandwich. They are carefully wrapped "to go" and include a huge dill pickle. Only the best and freshest products are used and the bread is freshly baked at the store. There are several kinds to choose from and the customers "build" their own sandwich by selecting the items from the chalkboard sandwich "menu" which is prominently displayed over the counter. The certificates for food handling and service are all current and it is a sanitary environment. There is also hand-dipped ice cream available along with a display case of some specialty baked items such as sticky buns. YUMMY!
